The Board ensures that the National Urban Development Policy is integrated into societal and professional discussions and provides ideas for the themes and projects of the National Urban Development Policy. It comprises around 40 members, appointed by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety for a period of three years.

At its first meeting in Berlin on 7 May 2008, the Board wholeheartedly welcomed the fact that the National Urban Development Policy was being established as a new policy area and stressed that this policy was to create an open laboratory and incubator of innovation for urban development issues. The players involved in the National Urban Development Policy implement this mandate continuously by staging various events and conducting discussions with their partners.
