Projects “Getting citizens involved in their city – civil society”

Below are some examples of projects that are part of the "Getting citizens involved in their city – civil society" initiative:

DIY St. Pauli

New methods of motivation and participation are being used in order to respond together with citizens to the urban challenges of increasing gentrification. Alongside the use of a central point of contact and information office (the GWA St. Pauli), public design advice is offered, “district shelves” assembled and stacked with current information on the particular district’s development, a website with an interactive district blog set up, and district meetings and open panel discussions held.

Citizens’ Group to Preserve the “Wanfried Houses”

To preserve the vacant half-timber houses in Wanfried, a Citizen Group consults people from Germany and the Netherlands who are interested in buying. The consultation is made on voluntary basis. Linking and fostering civil society initiatives and architectural aspects are thus supported in the small structurally weak region hard hit by demographic change and make the results especially interesting for National Urban Development Policy. Public relations can give essential support to civic engagement. The intention behind the devised PR modules is to render the free-of-charge brokering and advice of potential house buyers more efficient and diversify it.

Church and City

In this project the Protestant and Catholic churches and their respective charitable organizations seek to explore and advance their role as players in integrated urban planning. The approach relies on reference sites and regional nodes defined on the basis of a nationwide poll, and different events on topics such as "local authorities and the church in the urban space" or "the linkage of church activities and social spaces".

Activating civil society in the Social City programme

The aims of this project are to establish a nationwide platform of networks of excellence of civil society players and a group of experts to provide professional support (advisory council), strengthen federal state networks and federal state working parties as multipliers, document good examples of local civil society networks and develop recommended approaches and standards for the further mobilization of local civil society networks.

Activating civil society partnerships through neighbourhood development schemes designed to promote civic identity and enhance the community image

The thematic focus of this project is the activation of new civil society partnerships, based on the local economy, in the neighbourhood around Orleansplatz in the Munich district of Haidhausen.

Taking the initiative – providing an impetus for civil society engagement in neighbourhoods, cities and regions

The aim of this project is to demonstrate how civic and civil society initiatives can assume responsibility for the concerns of urban regeneration and urban development, thereby helping to make our cities liveable, vibrant and sustainable.

Integrative neighbourhood work in the Hanover districts of Misburg, Bemerode, Wettbergen, Oberricklingen and Davenstedt

The aim of this project, which is to be implemented in neighbourhoods with largely intact structures, is to significantly strengthen neighbourhood centres as well as to motivate the local players and assist them in assuming more responsibility for their neighbourhoods.
