Projects "Creating opportunities and preserving cohesion – the social city"

Below are some examples of projects that are part of the "Creating Opportunities and preserving Cohesion – Social City" initiative.

Sport development planning, Göttingen

In the field of sports development planning, civic participation tends to take the form of standardized household and club surveys. In addition to this kind of survey the town of Göttingen called on its inhabitants to engage in direct dialog with a view to drawing up a long-term integrated concept for sports and movement that suited their needs. Classic sector planning was thus opened up to creating new communication channels with citizens.

"Kinderhaus" district, Münster, Westphalia

With approx. 15,000 inhabitants, Kinderhaus is one of the larger districts in Münster. As a result of residential building activity in the 1970s and ‘80s, its population grew considerably, and the infrastructure was expanded accordingly. Today the district is home to some 100 nationalities. However, parts of the infrastructure and some residential buildings only partly meet current requirements, and have been earmarked for improvement on the basis of a district development concept. The residents of "Kinderhaus" participated in drawing up the concept as part of the pilot project.

Malstatt – strong as one (bottom up!) – Self-organization and Participation Office in Malstatt

Malstatt in Saarbrücken is regarded as a socially deprived district. Particularly at the heart of what used to be an industrial working class quarter, a large portion of the approx. 13,700 inhabitants are unemployed and reliant on welfare. More than 40% of the population are immigrants from over 120 countries, or next-generation immigrants, shaping both the district’s character and appearance. In 2009-10 Saarbrücken drew up a district development concept for Malstatt for the first time, which aimed to improve conditions in line with the local strengths and weaknesses. As part of the pilot project, by way of a learning process an interface was established between the municipal authorities and local groups. It serves as an example of a transition space between participation, mobilization, and the setting up of local civil society networks.

"Altstadt Nord Education Infrastructure", Cologne – a driving force in urban development. Communication of the plans

The "Altstadt Nord Education Infrastructure" project aimed to design the living and learning environment in the vicinity of six educational facilities in Cologne’s Altstadt Nord district. The goal was to create an innovative educational environment committed to joint autonomous learning. The plans initially addressed the aspect of education, which in turn provided the basis for the functional and creative development of the space allocation plans, while bearing the existing buildings and the district in mind.

Education as a driver of neighbourhood development – education as a location factor

This project is designed to illustrate how important it is that high-quality child care and educational facilities be linked with the provision of housing that meets the needs of families in towns and cities. The declared overarching objective is the applicability of the strategy to other projects.

Cologne Altstadt Nord education landscape – driver of urban development. Communicating the plans

The aim of the Altstadt Nord education landscape project is to shape the living and learning environment in the area around six educational institutions in the Altstadt Nord district of Cologne so as to create an innovative educational environment that is committed to self-directed and community learning.

Elbe Islands education drive

The Elbe Islands education drive in Hamburg has two key objectives. Education empowers – the provision of better educational opportunities will enhance the social inclusion of the residents of the Elbe Islands. Neighbourhood of the future – attractive educational institutions will enhance the image of the location as a place to live.

The Gropiusstadt education network

The aim of this programme is to respond to the social change and growing imbalance in the distribution of population groups in Gropiusstadt, a large housing estate in the Berlin borough of Neukölln, by offering attractive educational prospects from child day care centres to adult education, drawing together the key stakeholders in the area: the housing sector, public institutions, businesses, authorities, and of course parents to provide support.

FRESH VIEWS of the city – city images, city models, building the city with children and young people from different backgrounds

Children and young people – many of them from ethnic minorities – develop modules and media on their own neighbourhood and on "the city" at a more general level. This encourages them to get involved in the city, promotes urban education and furthers key skills such as reading, writing, use of technical and electronic media, presentation, organization.

Integrated urban (neighbourhood) policy in Berlin / framework strategy for social urban development

The aim of this project is to pool resources for the benefit of social urban development, through intensive cross-sectoral cooperation with the involvement of local stakeholders, especially in order to improve equality of opportunity. To this end, the planning framework has to be improved at all spatial levels (federal state, boroughs, districts).

Learning to fly with IBIS – A project for the development of innovative forms of involvement in multi-ethnic neighbourhoods

The aim of this project is to get migrants involved in urban development projects and to jointly shape coexistence in the neighbourhoods of Saarbrücken. Facilities in the neighbourhoods are to open up to meet the challenges of modern society with its high levels of immigration.

Neighbourhood pilots in the "Kleines Feld" district

The aims of this project are to encourage old and young residents – especially those with their own experience of migration – to get involved voluntarily; to develop new kinds of learning and educational opportunities; and, by encouraging voluntary engagement, to cultivate a neighbourhood climate that is based on mutual responsibility.
