Projects "Improving urban design – Baukultur"

Below are some examples of projects that are part of the "Improving Urban design – Baukultur" initiative.

Housing on trial Görlitz

The idea behind the project was to enable different inhabitants to experience living in the stately quarters dating back to the Wilhelminian era. Together with the inhabitants, the City Planning and Zoning Office and the Housing Association, Görlitz Kompetenzzentrum Revitalisierender Städtebau explored concepts for enhancing the status of the Wilheminian era quarters in cities in east Germany and to reduce prejudices against them. The period during which the pilot project came under the auspices of the National Urban Development Policy was used to test the idea as a trial experience and fine-tune it. The project was then successfully placed on a private financial footing.

Thinking the Street as Free Space / Grebenstein Construction Academy

The "Thinking the Street as Free Space" challenges citizens of Grebenstein to engage in a new debate on the future of the old town and the overall development of their town. Events, campaigns and innovative concepts to design urban free spaces and transportation were jointly developed, all destined to strengthen the old town. The project triggered the follow-up idea of "Grebenstein Construction Academy", which is meant to constructively continue the inclusion of civil society and familiarize citizens with the ways of modernizing houses.

Nexthamburg – the best ideas for the future of the city

Nexthamburg is Hamburg’s independent and open future lab for the city of tomorrow. It involves the public in developing visions, strategies and real ideas for future urban planning and puts these up for public debate – in this way stimulating Hamburg’s urban development. The public is invited to think about tomorrow’s city will look like – online and during the regular "Nexthamburg Sessions".

Competence Centre HausHalten, Leipzig

As early as the end of 2004 the non-profit association HausHalten e. V. collaborated closely with the City of Leipzig to try out its "Guardians House" model. The initiative seeks to carefully secure endangered old buildings in significant locations and preserve their values by addressing users with good ideas and a need for a lot of space. The goal of the subsidized project was to advance the Leipzig Guardians House initiative and transpose the model onto other cities.

Prospects for Baukultur in Eastern Westphalia-Lippe – development of a quality strategy for high-quality and demand-driven urban design

This project will develop market-oriented strategies and criteria for high-quality and demand-responsive urban design, taking into account the requirements of the various players on the housing market, such as developers, investors and construction financiers.

Probewohnen – a chance to sample living in late 19th century housing

The late 19th century neighbourhoods of many towns and cities in Eastern Germany are suffering from above-average vacancy rates. How can people’s prejudices about late 19th century neighbourhoods be overcome by giving them first-hand experience of living there? The "Probewohnen" project explores this question by giving residents from the urban fringe a chance to experience living in late 19th century neighbourhoods in Görlitz.

A 40 | B1 regional masterplan – 75 km of urban space

The aims of this project are to upgrade the physical environment and improve the design of the urban space along the A 40 federal motorway; to reach a standardized general approach along the entire length of the road; to make the A 40 identifiable as such; and, as an exhibition project, to become part of the Capital of Culture 2010 project entitled B1_21st.

Urban Space along the Rhine – creation and development of the "Rhine Working Party" in the Cologne/Bonn region

The "Urban Space along the Rhine" project, launched by the Montag Foundation for Urban Space, has worked intensively on attracting the cities and towns, with their players and projects, towards the Rhine and unlocking the hitherto neglected development potential inherent in the river landscape for the benefit of the region. The results of this collaborative project are now to be put to practical use and rooted in the region within the framework of a "Rhine Working Party".

"House-Keeping" centre of education and excellence

The aims of this project are to evolve the Leipzig "Guardhouse" initiative to preserve old non-refurbished buildings at sites of urban design significance and apply the model to other cities.
