The Types of settlement areas

In the database, you can find urban development projects from the following Types of settlement areas:

City centres/Urban district centres

The centres are important areas for a sustainable urban development. Aims such as mix of functions and short distances, quality of life and housing are especially to be met in the central areas of our cities. Projects in this field especially have to deal with different requirements and often have transregional significance.

Inner city housing areas

Maintenance and improvement of inner city residential areas are recognised aims of urban development and housing policy. These neighbourhoods are of special importance for a sustainable urban development. Innovative housing projects often emerge in the context of existing inner city areas.

Single family housing areas

In the 1960s, the single family house “in the countryside” became the epitome of widespread housing ideas. Since then, a rapid urban sprawl with the well-known resulting problems has taken place. Since these areas involve special problems for sustainable urban development, they require particular attention. Innovative projects in single family housing areas can give important impulses for a sustainable development of our cities.

Large housing estates

Large housing estates developed during the 1950s to 1970s in the Federal Republic of Germany and until the end of the 1980s in the GDR. The adjustment of these areas to the requirements of their inhabitants and the change on the housing market are special challenges for a socially oriented urban renewal. Recently, larger new building areas have come into existence. In these cases, however, care is taken that the shortcomings of former large housing estates are avoided, with functional and social variety and also with ecological and urban development innovations.

Industrial areas

The industrial areas of different sizes, often located on the urban fringes, constantly face new economic and ecological challenges. On the one hand, functioning existing industrial areas are to be secured and new areas to be developed. On the other hand, many areas become brownfield because of the structural change. The securing of industrial sites and reactivating of industrial wasteland are equally important tasks.

Mixed use areas

Sustainable urban development promotes the maintenance and development of settlement structures with mixed functions. A small-scale coexistence of facilities for living, working, education, care, leisure time and culture is aimed for. The city with short distances lives from an intricate mix of functions.

Village

Even if the classic, agriculturally shaped village is part of the past in many places, the rurally shaped regions continue to be important living space. In the meantime, there are a number of community projects for living and working, which show a perspective for a rural way of life beyond the individual property.
