Kurzbeschreibung:
Urban Flood Integration along the Rhine - Spatial Strategies The simultaneous claims on Rhine river fronts by urbanization, flood threat and management, as well as navigation produce complex spatial constellations.

The investigation of four urbanized water front developments along the Rhine according to their synergetic potential, but also regarding their scalar interdependencies between the river system as a whole, the regional context as well as the actual water front aims to examine the following questions:

What is the spectrum of spatial synergies possible between urban programs (housing/leisure/ commercial use/publicly accessible or partly accessible space/transport infrastructures) and flood management within the boundaries set by navigation?

The four case studies from South to North are:

  • Karlsruhe steered retention polder Rappenwört
  • Mainz Zollhafen port conversion with flood adaptive housing and retention capacities on site
  • Leverkusen groyne adaptation to accommodate floating structures
  • Nijmegen bypass and urban extension (Rotterdam)

Scalar time and space relations shall be visualized and investigated in order to show

  • how developments today evolve in relation to theories of path dependency and the specific spatial constellations/heritage on site,
  • where and by whom along the river such measures are initiated and how they are installed
  • how they perform regarding the periods before, during and after a flooding
  • as a sum, what urban typologies they produce.
