Hamburg-Dulsberg „Kulturhof“
In the newly erected premises of the "Alter Teichweg" comprehensive school, the Kulturhof Dulsberg was created as a cultural centre for the urban district. It offers rooms, which can be used free of charge for socio-cultural events. The coordination is performed by the urban district office. As an additional offer, a reading café has been opened which is also accessible outside school hours.
This project has been put into the archive. The project details will not be updated anymore.
Context
Source: plan zwei Stadtplanung und Architektur, Hannover
The Hamburg district of Dulsberg was developed in the 1920s. Buildings destroyed during the war were rebuilt after 1951.
The urban district is not perceived as a social focal point, but is one of the neglected districts compared to the Hamburg average. It is characterised by economically weak households and a high proportion of small and smallest apartments. The insufficient supply of childcare institutions, suitable meeting points for residents, and of leisure services, has also been considered problematic since the early 1990s.
In view of this, an integrated management concept was devised in 1992 for developing the district. From 1995 to 2002, a large number of measures has been developed and implemented within the framework of the programme for social district development (STEP) of the Hanseatic City of Hamburg in order to improve the situation of the urban district.
Project description
Source: plan zwei Stadtplanung und Architektur, Hannover
Together with the management of educational and cultural work, and with the Dulsberg urban district office, the urban district, the school authorities and the urban development authorities, a project was developed for improving the communication possibilities within the urban district. After long planning preparations, new premises were built in the "Alter Teichweg" comprehensive school. Since then, this has been used by the Kulturhof Dulsberg as an events centre in the urban district.
By converting the school auditorium and extending the glass-roofed café area, a central events room has been created. It can hold up to 400 people. After structural changes in the entrance area, it can also be used outside school times.
The Kulturhof is operated by Dulsberg residents, who are able to use the rooms for free for socio-cultural events. In part, suitable rooms in the school can also be used. The range of services is large and takes into account the interests of many residents in the district. For example, dance festivals, theatre performances, podium discussions, children's parties and events for older people are held here.
Another service is provided by the Dulsberg Lesecafé (reading café), which has been opened in the school with a separate access for public use.
A programme committee under the management of the cultural coordination of the urban district office comprises representatives from creative cultural institutions in the urban district and from the Alter Teichweg school. It develops and examines organisational procedures and responsibilities, as well as the programme organisation and publicity work for the Kulturhof.
The urban district office is also responsible for the management, organisation and coordination of events, publicity work, renting and for the technical management of the Kulturhof.
