SUDO meeting in Japan: G7 Urban Development Track to be continued in Japan’s 2023 presidency

The successful meeting of the Senior Urban Development officials (SUDOs) in Japan strengthened the G7 multilateral agenda in regard to urban development.

End of March 2023 the Senior Urban Development Officials (SUDOs), i.e. the representatives of the G7 ministries responsible for urban development, came together in Japan for their 5th SUDO meeting to discuss the content of the 2023 ministerial meeting. Guiding topics under Japan’s G7 presidency will be Carbon Neutrality & Resilience, Inclusive Cities, Recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine, and Digitalization.

SUDO representative for Germany is Prof. Oliver Weigel, as Head of Division at the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB). Beyond the multilateral G7 agenda, he got the opportunity for bilateral exchange with all national representatives. Furthermore, part of the fifth SUDO meeting was site visits such as the guided stroll through Ikebukuro with its district development through the upgrading of public spaces. The SUDOs discussed the use of various public-private-partnership models for the development of several city parks into attractive locations.

The G7 members, as well as U7/ICLEI and OECD in the role of observers, are committing to the key messages of the ministerial communiqué. Once again, the Japanese colleagues assured the continuation of the Urban Development track, which was established as a result of the first-ever G7 Urban Development Ministers Meeting, initiated and hosted by BMWSB under Germany’s presidency in 2022.
