With the New Urban Agenda for Sustainable Urban Development in Germany and Worldwide

Germany´s First National Progress Report on the Implementation of the New Urban Agenda

What is the state of sustainable urban development in Germany? And how can it be measured? These and other questions are addressed by a new study published by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community (BMI). This study was presented to the public on May 5th, 2021, by representatives and partners of the German National Urban Development Policy. It was designed as the first national progress report on the implementation of the New Urban Agenda, and was prepared by the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) as well as the German Institute of Urban Affairs (Difu). At the 14th Federal Congress of the National Urban Policy, Dr. Oliver Weigel, Head of Division for Urban Development Policy at the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community submitted the report from this study to UN-Habitat. In doing so, Germany acknowledged its ongoing commitment to the goal of urban transformation for sustainability. Rafael Tuts, Head of the Global Solutions Division at UN-Habitat, emphasized: "Germany does not need to hide, and rather can make a stronger contribution internationally with its Urban Development Policy and Practice. In particular, direct exchanges between German cities and their International Municipal Partners promise solutions here.”
